Cheope rivelato

Massimo My, Italia, 2004, 52'

domenica 7 agosto - serata finale

I segreti del Partenone (fuori concorso)
Gary Glassman, Francia, 78'

The conference opened with greetings from the President of the Kepha Foundation, Patrizio M. R. Benvenuti, to the authorities present, to the speakers and to the public, pointing out the reasons which motivated Kepha to organize this encounter dedicated to the theme of the recovery of stolen works of art, a conference whose participants included noteworthy persons committed to the difficult task of recovery of works of art which have “disappeared”, and which, thanks to the tireless efforts of the authorities in charge, are now being restituted to our country.
President Benvenuti began by pointing out that Kepha’s objective, as outlined in its charter, is the promotion and protection of cultural heritage, the preservation of works of art, the rediscovery of crafts, the recovery of the artistic patrimony, and the organizing of cultural events and initiatives, all essential steps towards the education of beauty and culture which Kepha has followed since it was founded. For this reason, the Foundation could not help but present this encounter, dedicated to the delicate problem of the Italian cultural patrimony scattered all over the world.
Architect Gesualdo Campo, General Director of the Regional Department of Cultural Patrimony and Sicilian Identity, greeted those present emphasizing the successful recovery of important archaeological pieces now being returned to Italy from abroad, such as the Goddess of Morgantina, robbed 30 years ago and restituted to the museum of Aidone, thereby enriching Sicily’s cultural patrimony.
Castelvetrano’s mayor then spoke, thanking the Foundation for its collaboration with the municipal administration in the promotion of many important cultural events in this territory.
Giovanni Miceli, attorney-at-law and Director of CAM – Campus Archaeological Museum, called attention to the choice of image selected for the conference: that of a tombstone currently in a museum in Basel, Switzerland, a symbol of hope that many other works of art, especially archaeological, may be recovered and make their way back to Selinunte.
Word was then passed to General Pasquale Muggeo, Commander of Carabinieri, task force for the Protection of Cultural Patrimony, based in Rome, followed by Capt. Massimiliano Quagliarella, Command Section of Archaeology, based in Rome and Capt. Giuseppe Marseglia, Commander of the Carabinieri TPC unit of Palermo.
Following the important discussions held by the officers of the Carabinieri actively engaged in recovery operations, were discussions by journalist Fabio Isman, by the Honorable Paolo Giorgio Ferri, and State Advocate General Maurizio Fiorilli. Lastly were discussions by Dr. Catherine Greek, Director of the Selinunte Archaeological Park and Cave of Cusa "Vincenzo Tusa, and Professor Sebastiano Tusa, Superintendent of the Province of Trapani. At the conclusion of these important presentations, the President of the Foundation read a message sent especially for the event by the Italian Under-Secretary of the Ministry for Cultural Patrimony and Activities, Francesco Maria Giro, addressing the participants of the conference. Afterwards, all guests were invited to join the buffet luncheon.

Message of Under Secretary Francesco Maria Giro, on the occasion of the conference “Stolen History, from Oblivion to Recovery *1861 – 2011*”
(Triscina, Selinunte, May 8th, 2011)

The commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Italian Unity is not only an occasion to rediscover the roots of our national identity but also an opportunity to reflect upon the immense historical, artistic, cultural, and landscape patrimony which constitutes the uniqueness and peculiarity of our nation in the world. A patrimony often compromised in the past by neglect and abandonment which have consequently caused degradation and impoverishment of that which could correctly be defined as our “petroleum”.
We must, therefore, be in debt to the intense social commitment demonstrated by law enforcement officials who endeavor daily and with great professionalism and competence in investigative actions of recovery, protection and safeguarding of the patrimony of our territory. My greeting goes to all these authorities and I am certain that today’s initiative will give honor to the great work carried out by all those persons who, in the course of the years, have unearthed seriously compromised artifacts and works of art.

Undersecretary, Ministry for Cultural Patrimony and Activity

This initiative was a follow-up of the event presented to the Mediterranean public in 2009: “The Memory of the Stones – Selinunte, Possible Visions” , an exhibit created by architect Pier Paolo Raffa who recounts the city of Selinunte through antique images and photographs. Possible visions, images of what could have been the antique prestige of this city, affined to the sea, daughter of the sea: an attempt to imagine a place and its community just before its decline.

In this conference other stories were elaborated in order that the city and its history may become better known and no longer forgotten, even in terms of its recent past, an example of this being the photo chosen for the event’s poster which depicts the paved road which leads to Marinella from Castelvetrano.

“The rediscovery of ancient ports. The results of recent archaeological research”

Dates: March – May 2010
Partner: Soprintendenza del Mare di Palermo

The School/Superintendence of the Sea Project in which the Kepha Foundation collaborated, offering its headquarters on the grounds of CAM - Campus Archeological Museum of Triscina, Selinunte, a proposal for scholastic education on problems regarding the historical-archeological patrimony lying or recovered offshore and which offer testimony to the ancient peoples driven, by various forces, to migrate from one bank of the Mediterranean to another.

The project provided for a series of training lessons for the teaching staff of 1st and 2nd level public secondary schools in the provinces of Palermo and Trapani for the 2009/2010 academic year and the creation of teaching aids able to capture the attention of young students as well as the many nautical experiences aimed at students.

First phase: training lessons for the teaching staff. The lessons were conducted by distinguished scholars and regarded data relative to recent archaeological examinations aimed at individuating the structure of ancient ports with particular reference to a broad chronological period extending from the Punic epoch to the late-Roman era. An instructional lecture was dedicated to ancient Mediterranean navigation.

The conferences were held on the grounds of CAM - Campus Archeological Museum of Triscina, Selinunte – Castelvetrano (TP) for schools of the Province of Trapani, at 4:00 p.m. the first scheduled day, the second day was dedicated to teachers coming from schools within the Province of Trapani.

A certificate of participation was given to all teachers present.

Second phase: Educational workshop

The second phase of the project involved the production of a map of known and presumed port facilities and whose possible risks to archeological sites and artifacts will be evaluated and reported. This document paper will be prepared based upon a survey of archaeological evidence either already identified or to be identified with their respective georeferential positioning on cartographic means

An identifying chart will be elaborated signaling all information as to function, geological dating, possibility of evaluation and risks relative to each recorded artifact.

Following this will be a phase of linking card and paper to arrive at a finished product consisting in a WIKI, i.e., a multimedia product to be emitted and managed on the Web and made part of scholastic institutions, possibly enhanced with the creation of a link added to the website of the Superintendence of the Sea in order to make the best use of these means of publication and publicizing.
